Rush Week: What to Wear
By: Maddy Hill (www.missmadds.com)
Nothing gets a blogger more excited than helping a potential new member look her best for sorority recruitment. I’m here to give you some inspiration for your rush wardrobe, one day at a time. Follow along below for some of my favorite dress brands and helpful tips for how to plan your outfits, as well as how to organize your Panhellenic bag with essentials you’ll need throughout the day.
Open House: Days 1-2
Open house fashion is a no-brainer! Don’t stress about what you’re wearing the first two days, since we really want to see your smiling faces and inner beauty. It’s smart to wear tennis shoes since these days will be jam-packed with walking around West Campus between houses. We love light colored sneakers, like Adidas Superstars or Nike’s Tennis Classics. As for the shorts, J. Crew Chinos in Honey Brown are the way to go! Go easy on the jewelry, since you still have three more rounds to rock your statement pieces!
Philanthropy: Days 3-4
This round is your first chance to show off your personal style, but doesn’t need to be anything too fancy. Think Sunday best — a simple sundress with sandals or wedges will be your best bet! Since you will still be visiting a good number of houses on Philanthropy round and the houses will have some sort of little craft for you to complete, make sure your dress allows for movement and isn’t too hot. For some dress inspo, you can visit Mimi and Red, A Cut Above or The Impeccable Pig. For the shoes, any nice sandals or cute wedges are appropriate. As for jewelry? You can’t go wrong with a little Kendra Scott.
Sisterhood: Day 5
You can sense the shift in how formal dress is whenever you walk into your first house on Sisterhood day. But don’t fret, we’re here to help you out! A great way brainstorm an outfit for this round is to find a dress that is nearly as formal as preference night but has more color. The material of this dress will likely be a bit thicker and the dress may have a bit more shape to it than the ones you wear to philanthropy day, and we like seeing chunky or strappy heels for this round as well. Tobi has some super cute, nicer dresses. Kendra Scotts are cute for this round as well, but feel free to take it up a notch with a statement piece like a cuff!
Preference Night: Day 6
We have four words for you: little black cocktail dress. This is the most formal round of recruitment, and your dress should be classy and clean cut. It can be hard to find a little black dress that’s appropriate enough for this night, but we’ve had lots of luck at Nordstrom, Loft and even Banana Republic. Statement shoes can be fun, but we really love wearing nude or black heels with dainty jewelry during this round.
Bid day: Day 7
You’ve finally made it to the end of the week and are ready to welcome in a new era of your life with your fabulous sisters. Bid day is our favorite for many reasons, especially the dresses! It’s so fun to see everyone’s style, and you can’t go wrong with a brightly colored dress. This is the best time to wear prints, color blocking or Lily Pulitzer and you have the choice between nice sandals or wedges as well. Just remember — you’ll be running home to your new sisters once you get your bid card, so make sure your dress will hold up until you’re home.
What to include in your bag
Here are a few things that are helpful to include in your Panhellenic tote bag. It may be hot hot hot outside, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still look your best.
- Travel sized hairspray
- Comb or brush
- Oil blotting sheets
- Travel sized deodorant
- Powder and/or concealer
- Breath mints
- A journal and pen if you want to write down names of girls you meet, etc.
- A granola bar or pretzels (I tend to get low blood sugar super quickly, and always have to have something to eat just in case!)
We can’t wait to see all of your beautiful faces and cute recruitment outfits!
